Daily Lyric: UNDERSTAND ME

Updated: Mar 18

Understand me

And try to see

Just where I’m coming from

Listen I pray

And hear what I say

And I say it not in fun

Try to understand

I’m the kind of man

With emotions and empathy

And I can sense

What you’ll be up against

Though you’re not looking for sympathy

Well, I can’t say I love you ‘cause I barely know you

But I know enough to care

And I care enough to try damn hard to show you

That you gotta untangle yourself from this snare

Now I don't wanna get involved in other people's affairs

But I know what you got is wrong

And what I see coming is just too much to bear

You're gonna find yourself in trouble before long

You gotta believe

And try to receive

The signals I’m sending out

I’m down on my knees

I’m begging you please

Take me with no doubt

Pay me some mind

You just have got to find

Somebody closer to you

Take my word

The situation’s absurd

You gotta undo what you got into

Don’t laugh at me don’t shrug it off and say

That I’m just a crazy kid after your bod

I know this is probably your own special way

To say I Wanna Be Different And Odd!

But I’m not trying to make you my girl

I’m not dividing your attention

But what you got going ain’t the way of the world

And it's too big and scary to mention

Understand me

You’ve just got to see

That there’s more than just physical attraction

Hear what I say

And don’t fall prey

To your initial gut reaction

You gotta be real

Though I make you feel

That you wanna slap me in the face

But give it some thought

Don’t get yourself caught

I believe that I’ve stated my case

Understand me, you’ve just got to see that there’s more than just physical attraction.

If "Hey Frumie" was about a guy falling in love with someone he could never have, this song is about watching a girl fall for a guy who is totally wrong for her. I wrote it when I saw such a situation unfold when I was hanging out in Jerusalem in the late 1980s. Fortunately, I'm pleased to say, it ultimately didn't work out between them.

With a hook lifted from another, more famous song that you'll probably recognize right away, I added the lyrics to a melody co-written with my musical partner Izzy Kieffer and recorded it for our REALITY SHOCK album.
