There’s a silver moon shining down on an early spring night
I wait downstairs wondering if what I’m about to do is right
The front door opens, and I nervously shuffle my feet
And my heart does the obligatory skip of a beat
She asks me what took me seven months to come see her
But I didn’t know what to say, just that I wanted to be with her
I was lonely, looking for some company, and like they say,
her name came up
She was waiting all this time, I guess she never gave up
Flower girl
Oh sha la la baby
Flower girl
Won’t you be my lady
You’re driving me crazy
Tell me what you feel
‘Cause sometimes I don’t know if you’re only teasing me
Or if you mean what you say for real
Well, I met her at the end of the summer on King George Street
She was stuck in the city without anyplace to sleep
I said I knew a good place to put her up, but it turned out a goof
‘Cause we slept in the bomb shelter instead of up on the roof
Maybe that incident made me really look uncool
But tonight I’m gonna show her that I’m made of something,
that I’m not just another fool
I wanna let her know it and I hope she’ll understand
That’s why I got these flowers in my hand
Flower girl ...
Well she’s so nice
She’s so pretty
I think I could love her but I’m too scared to show it
But I’ll treat her right as best as I can
And she never turns me away any time I call
Well she’s so cute
She’s so funny
She’ll kill me with her cuteness before I know it
But there’s one thing she doesn’t understand:
It’s either all or none and I want it all
Flower girl ...

"Based on a true story" ... one that took place in the mid-1980s during my army service. Ultimately the relationship, such as it was, led nowhere, but for awhile, though, it turned me into a mushy romantic. The song was loosely based on John Cafferty's "Boardwalk Angel," from the Eddie and the Cruisers soundtrack, which was in heavy rotation on my Walkman at the time. Never recorded or performed.
