I didn’t write a song today
I made up some excuse
It’s easier to run away
Than to face up to the truth
The truth is in the notebooks
Waiting to be told
But the notebooks are just taking up space
Slowly getting old.
I didn’t write a song today
Instead I ran around
Throwing all my time away
Hanging out in town
I can’t duck my responsibility
It’s right there in my face
But my fears and vulnerability
Keep me frozen in my place.
I didn’t write a song today
I fell asleep instead
It was easier to drift away
And leave my words unsaid
As simple as the truth may be
It’s hard for me to speak it
But my duty catches up to me
Before I can even seek it.

A song about not writing a song ... is that metaprocrastination? Ironically, from my burst of prolificity in the early 2000s, following the advice of The Artist's Way author Julia Cameron that if you feel you have nothing to write about, write about not having something to write about. I amassed quite a few of these. Not only not written, but not recorded or performed, either.
