Daily Lyric: I LIFT MY EYES

Jesus Jones said, right here right now

Watching the world wake up from history

But I can’t seem to find a way how

To shake myself clear of this puzzling mystery

Why can’t I write? Have I lost my voice?

Have I run out of things to say?

While the righteous die and the wicked rejoice

Surely I can speak up today.

I lift my eyes to the mountains

From where will come my salvation

I shake my fist at the heavens

To where hides the lord of creation

What can he say in his own defense?

How much longer will the world turn without sense?

I look out across the ocean

Perhaps out there I can find some consolation.

George is dead, and his guitar gently weeps

Yet that evil Chairman President survives

The Angel of Death, he grimly reaps

But the agents of death somehow stay alive

A man who lived for peace, indeed who was peace

Is from this world now gone

But the child-killing monster who lip-services peace

Somehow manages to live on.

I lift my eyes ...

Eric Clapton once said, the blues is dying

A slow graceful death

And I must add, while fretting and sighing

That rock’n’roll is also taking its last breath

Whether peace and love, or sex and drugs

It’s all passing on and fading away

And all we’re left with is the punks and thugs

Yammering and clamoring to have their day.

I lift my eyes ...

I lift my eyes to the mountains, from where will come my salvation.

As the first two lines in the second verse would indicate, I wrote this song not long after "the quiet Beatle" passed away. It was shortly after 9-11 and it irritated me to no end that someone like George, who worked his whole life to bring peace and enlightenment to the world, died relatively young while the father of modern terrorism, Yasser Arafat, went on living his life into a ripe old age. And what was even more irritating was that too many gullible westerners believed that the latter was as much about peace as the former ... there aren't enough words to express my disgust. So this song was an attempt to frame that.

May the world know real peace soon, with all the terror mongers and their enablers wiped from the face of the earth.
