You saw right away that I don’t ask for much
So you assumed you got me in the bag
You tell me you need me, and you use me like a crutch
But you treat me like a rag
You seduce my brains out to ensure your success
Something I never let anyone do
You give me orders and tell me how to dress
Just because I said I’d do anything for you
Try
Try to understand
Try
Try to understand
That I
I’m just a man
I’m just a regular man
You bring your friends along on our dates
But you get mad if I stop to talk to one of mine
When I come pick you up, I always have to wait
But you yell at me if I’m a minute overtime
You want me to give it to you every night, all night
Then you expect me to get up and go to work every day
And then you get all hurt and uptight
When I tell you I can’t go on this way
Try
Try to understand
Try
Try to understand
That I
I’m just a man
I’m just an ordinary man
Sunday I called, you said you were tired
Monday you had nothing to wear
Tuesday you claimed you had a flat tire
Wednesday you had to wash your hair
Thursday you said you’d be working late
Friday you went shopping in town
Saturday we finally made a date
Saturday night you were nowhere to be found!
Try
Try to understand
Try
Try to understand
That I
I’m just a man
I’m just an everyday man

This song goes back to 1984, when I was involved with the Girlfriend From Hell™. She really did treat me the way the scenarios play out in the verses. The choruses are my protests against being treated like ... well, the way she treated me: I'm just a regular, ordinary, everyday man ... not the idealized figure who is capable of catering to your every whim. Sometimes even the ordinariest, most regular guys have enough of being treated like a doormat by people who supposedly love them.
The music takes a little bit from Lou Reed's "I'm Waiting For The Man," from Lou Reed Live, albeit in a 6/8 shuffle. Not recorded, yet.
