It doesn’t matter
What you did with her
If you love her then shut up
Out you spit it
How you did it
If you wanna hang onto it then shut up
You ought to know
To keep the train on its rails
It’s not a game of kiss and tell
No one has to know
The intimate details
What you do in your bedroom should be kept to yourself
You’ll regret it
If to the world you said it
Might as well forget it if you don’t shut up
If you want her
If you need her
If you love her then shut up
It’s your business
And only your business
If you don’t watch your mouth then your fling will be flung
‘Cause if you blurt
In the end it will hurt
My advice to you, kid, is guard your tongue
If you want her
If you need her
If you love her then shut up

I wrote this one during my army service, late one afternoon sitting in my tower somewhere in the Jordan Valley in the summer of 1986, after listening to some of my fellow soldiers back in the barracks brag (and undoubtedly exaggerate) about their supposed conquests. I kept my mouth shut but I wanted to yell at them, imagine how she feels that you're telling us all this. Musically, I was thinking of Suzanne Vega's "Left of Center," which was in rotation on the radio at the time.
